Each unit comprises two- to three-storey modules that span over 170 sq m (1,830 sq ft). Their modular nature allows them to be rented individually or merged into larger units. GreenPlaces operates 10 of such properties in Switzerland, and has so far built five in Germany. It aims to construct around 50 by 2030. The use of timber as building material implies active CO2 storage. Roof-mounted photovoltaic systems supply cheap electricity for internal consumption while heat pumps cover the heating needs."
